Orthodontics for Children and Teenagers in Sutton, Surrey

Children and teenagers may need braces or dental aligners for any number of reasons, including crooked, overlapping or overcrowded teeth or a ‘bad bite.’

A ‘bad bite’ (or Malocclusion) is a discrepancy in the sizes of the top and bottom jaws. When the upper jaw is bigger than the lower jaw, it’s called an overbite. When the lower jaw is bigger, it’s an underbite.

Sometimes tooth and jaw problems can be caused by tooth decay, losing baby teeth too soon, accidents, or habits like thumb sucking. But often they’re inherited, so if you or someone in your family needed braces, it’s likely that your kids will too.

Often, your dentist will be the first to notice problems during a regular visit and will recommend that you see an orthodontist (a dentist who specialises in correcting jaw and teeth alignment problems). At Keppel Advanced Dentistry our specialist orthodontist will discuss and determine the best orthodontic option for your child or teenager.

In recent years, clear removable braces that move teeth with plastic trays called aligners (rather than wires and rubber bands) have become available, but these are usually only for people without bite problems.

Some children may need other devices too, such as headgear, which is usually worn only at night. Headgear uses a horseshoe-shaped wire that attaches to the back teeth, pushing them back and allowing more room for teeth in the front of the mouth. Our orthodontist at Keppel Dentistry might also recommend that your child have one or more teeth removed to create more space in his or her mouth.

Starting the process early doesn’t mean a child will get braces right away. It just means the orthodontist will be able to determine which problems exist and assess the best time to start treatment.

Braces correct alignment problems by putting steady pressure on the teeth, which eventually moves them into a straighter position.

Orthodontics at an Early Age

Interceptive Orthodontics

Space Maintainers: When a baby tooth is lost early due to decay, trauma or other reasons, a device called ‘space maintainer’ is needed to keep the space until the adult tooth erupts.

Myofunctional Appliances and Treatment: When the upper and lower jaws are not positioned correctly, functional appliances are used to guide the jaw growth.

Expansion Appliances: If jaws are narrower than normal, expansion appliances need to be used to expand the jaws and position teeth correctly.

Habit Breakers: Habits like finger or thumb sucking can cause orthodontic issues for children. Habit breakers are crucial to prevent future orthodontic problems and reduce the need for orthodontic treatments.

Children’s Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are the most common and the most effective way of straightening teeth. The results are more predictable as they are non-removable. To make it more attractive for children and teenagers, we have a wide choice of coloured elastic bands.

For teenagers who require teeth straightening and who may be more self-conscious, we can also offer Invisalign Clear aligners and ceramic cosmetic braces that are less noticeable compared to metal braces.

Invisalign for Teenagers

If your child or teenager is looking for a discreet option to straighten their teeth, then Invisalign clear aligners can be a very good choice. Invisalign for teens is a very popular orthodontic option as they consist of clear aligners which can be removed as and when required.

A wide range of orthodontic issues can be treated with the Invisalign system and the treatment duration can be as little as three months.

The team at Keppel are welcoming, friendly and professional. I was not sure how much of a difference I was going to see afterwards but Henry and team have done amazingly in straightening my teeth with braces. I am happy I went with the braces option as opposed to invisiglin. I took advice from Henry on this and the results have paid off.I would highly recommend Keppel.

I wouldn’t go anywhere else! Been coming here for years along with my family for dental, ortho and hygiene care. Tom and his team are friendly, professional, courteous and have the ability to make you feel informed yet relaxed. After childhood and young adult dentist trauma Tom has finally allowed me to trust dentists.

I have been going to Tom at Keppel Advanced Dentisty for many years now. I had terrible problems with my teeth, a legacy from childhood, and when I arrived for my first appointment was very nervous but I was put completely at ease by Tom and his team. My treatment options were discussed openly and honestly and over the years I have had two lots of implant surgery done under local anesthetic by Dr Carl Manhem, their implantologist. Having had a bone graft and four implants, I have to say that apart from some localised swelling I never had any pain through any of my procedures. I have had many other treatments done and have regular check-ups and visits to the hygienist. What is also outstanding is the aftercare, which is so important. Visits are followed up with a phone call to check all is well and I know if I have a problem they will fit me in ASAP and sort it. Yes this is private and it has/does cost but it has transformed me and has been worth every penny. Thank you to Tom and his team.

Tom Keppel has been my dentist for 20 years. He is also my mum’s dentist, my children’s dentist and my husbands dentist. He is a wonderful dentist and I trust him and his staff. My enormous fearOf the dentist has gradually deminished since I’ve been coming here and I can thoroughly recommend his practice.
