Dental Bridges Replacing Missing Teeth

Dental Bridges in Sutton, Surrey

A dental bridge is a cosmetic dental treatment used to replace a missing tooth by placing a false tooth in the gap and anchoring it to the teeth either side  by placing crowns over the top of them.

The dental bridge literally gets its name because it bridges the gap with a false tooth and two crowns.

Who is a bridge suitable for?
  • A dental bridge is suitable for anyone missing one or more teeth. The surrounding teeth will be the foundation for the false tooth so they, along with the gum tissue, should be in good overall health.
  • A dental implant can also be used to replace a missing tooth, but some patients may prefer using a dental bridge because it can be put in place without the need for oral surgery.
  • The anchoring teeth are prepared in the same way they would be to have an individual crown, which feels similar to a filling carried out under a local anaesthetic.

What should you expect?

  • At the first appointment one of our dentists will talk to you about what you want to achieve from your treatment and discuss your options. If a dental bridge is the right treatment two more appointments will be made.
  • At the second appointment, the teeth that the dental bridge is being anchored to will need to be prepared to receive the crowns that will hold the false tooth in place. The teeth are prepared by taking away some of the outer layers, providing space for the crowns to fit over. Your dentist will then take an impression, or 3D digital image of the surrounding teeth, which will be used to make your dental bridge. The prosthetic can be fabricated in a dental laboratory by dental technicians, or in-house through the use of a computerized milling machine, like CEREC, which can mill your dental bridge while you wait. If your permanent bridge will take some time to make you will be fitted with a temporary bridge before you leave the practice. The temporary bridge will provide you with the functionality and appearance of your permanent prosthetic, and help protect the teeth that have been reshaped against damage or decay.
  • At your third appointment your temporary bridge will be removed and you permanent one put in place. The crowns will be securely fitted to the teeth on either side of the gap with dental cement and the false tooth will be secured to your gum tissue to prevent bacteria being able to get between your gum and the tooth causing infection.
